Gresford Athletic Colts 3 Hawarden Rangers 4 Saturday 12th. August 2006
The colts started bright and adapted their game well to the strong swirling wind up at Darland. With a couple of half chances wasted, it was hawarden who, in their first real attack opened up the scoring, following a defensive mistake by the two centre half's on 22mins. It got much worse on 33mins when again some sloppy defending was punished by the burly strike force of Hawarden. Welcome to Welsh national league football!! Two changes at half time brought about a cracking fight back almost straight after the re start. Phil Jones (no 7) on 55mins was put through and he coolly slotted home. 1-2 game on so we thought! but some weak and in experienced play by Gresford colts saw Hawarden extend their lead only two minutes later 1-3. In fairness, Gresford never gave up and kept battling away in midfield, Ryan Billington and Tom Burgin proving an equal match to the opposing midfield. But it was Ioan Davies who was a handful down the right hand side that help provide Nathan Spencer (no 9) with a simple tap in on 72mins. 2-3 With Gresford starting to boss things from midfield it wasn't long before the equaliser came and on 79mins Philly Jones got his second of the game. Great fight back by the young lads and thoroughly deserved! but football can be a cruel game, and with the final minutes being played out Hawarden won a series of corner kicks, and almost bullied the ball into the Gresford net on 88mins! Final score 3-4. with the squad re shuffled at the last moment, Gresford put up a great fight and thoroughly deserved something from this game. Team 1. Nick Underwood (7) 2. Danny Brown (7) 3.
