Gresford Athletic's brave attempt at reaching the semi final of the Welsh Youth Cup for the consecutive year ended in tears when they fell at the first hurdle against The New Saints. Their first blow came after 12 minutes when striker George Koumas limped off with an injury and then they went down to ten men at the end of the first half when Simon Smith was dismissed following a rash challenge, he had earlier been booked for dissent so referee Ian Evans had no choice. Despite being a man short, Gresford had stacks of chances to seal this game by a decent margin but some brilliant goalkeeping by man of the match Jim Hayns kept the Saints in it, twice denying Danny Roberts, Andy Morris and then Max Peate. It took 100 minutes for the deadlock to be broken and the Gresford defence was breached when Ryan Marriott beat Richard Ackerley from close range. Gresford hit back almost immediately when Roberts was clattered and Peate tucked away the resulting penalty. From the incident Gresford had Roberts carried off and finished the game with 9 men and then right at the death with time almost up, defender Cammy Dalton who been pushed up front notched a winner for The Saints.
