Gresford traveled to Llanfair PG with six of their successful youth team in the squad and new signing Steve Cowap. They almost took the lead in the first minute when a good cross found the unmarked Danny Purdie but his headed flew over the bar. Slack marking in the Gresford defence then allowed Richard owen to opening the scoring with a good header. Llan then forced five corners in quick succession but Gareth Rowland (pictured) in the Gresford goal dealt comfortably with them. Eddie Morris-Jones and the returning Phil Jones saw efforts fly off target as Gresford looked for an equaliser. Llanfair went two up after twenty four minutes, Rowland making a great save only for the unmarked Dave Evans to net the rebound. Rowland then made a brave save at the feet of Richard Owen as Llanfair piled on the pressure. Gresford were fortunate to get back in the game on forty one minutes when home defender Simon Giddings scored an own goal. Phil Jones almost created the equaliser for Athletic but his great run and cross evaded everybody. On the stoke of half time Rowland again thwarted Llanfair with an excellent save.

Rowland was soon in action again as he went full length to parried a shot. Llanfair then hit the post from twenty yards as they tried to kill the game off. Gresford introduced their three substitutes in a effort to get back into the game and should have leveled when Ryan Billington headed a Ioan Davies cross over the bar. Llanfair settled the game on eighty minutes with the best goal of the game, Billy Evans heading home a fine cross from Chris Williams. Gresford battled on trying to get back into the game but solid defending from the Llanfair defence prevented them from creating anything of note.
