FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT
Rhos Aelwyd 2 Gresford Athletic 3Saturday 6th. January 2007

Gresford traveled to Rhos Aelwyd the team who knocked them out of NEWFA challenge cup last season. Gresford started brightly taking the game to Rhos from the off. Danny Purdie and Phil Jones could have put them ahead in the first ten minutes, the later seeing his effort come back off the post. Shaun Williams and Wyn Jones then combined to set up Craig Williams but his effort was off target. Rhos then had a great chance to take the lead but fired over. Jones and Purdie then had further chances to put Gresford ahead but both efforts missed the target. Shaun Williams then forced the home keeper into a good save with a twenty yard shot. Just as it looked like it was going to be one of those days for Gresford, who should have been well ahead, Kevin Todd headed home a Wyn Jones free kick to give them a well deserved lead. Todd almost doubled the advantage when he headed a cross from Shaun Williams against the post. Williams then created another chance that Craig Williams fired against the post and from the rebound hit the woodwork again.
Half Time Rhos Aelwyd 0 Gresford Athletic 1
Rhos took the game to Gresford at the start of the second half but with Craig Williams causing the Rhos defence all kinds of trouble a second goal for Gresford looked ominous, this came when Williams headed an excellent Alan Williams cross over the Rhos keeper. Gareth Rowland in the Gresford goal was then called into his first action of the match as he saved at the feet of a Rhos forward Rhos reduced the deficit on seventy minutes when Kevin Hope diverted a cross into his own goal. Within minutes Craig Williams seemed to have restored Gresford's two goal advantage but the goal was disallowed for offside. They did not have to wait long for a goal that did count as Phil Jones hit a powe
rful shot into the bottom corner. With five minutes remaining Rhos scored a second to give the score line a false impression and only for an excellent save by Rowland in the last minute when he smothered at the feet of a Rhos attacker the game could have gone into extra time.
Gresford will still be wondering how they did not bag a hatfull of goals.
