On a very heavy and muddy pitch it took a while for either team to get into any sort of rhythm. Bala broke the deadlock on twenty minutes when a break down the left saw Shaun Williams out muscled and a cross shot from just inside find the area find the far corner of the net. Bala where now taking the game to Gresford at every opportunity with Gresford relying on the counter attack Bala almost increased their lead on thirty minutes when Gareth Rowland in Gresford goal had to palm away an awkward cross shot. Five minutes later Bala did score when a cross from the right deceived everybody to give a tap in at the far post. Simon Holloway then had a great chance to pull a goal back for Gresford but after a good move involving Alan Williams and Danny Purdie he was blocked on route to goal.

Gresford were then awarded a free kick on the edge of the Bala penalty area, but Danny Purdie's shot flew well over the bar. Bala increased their lead on forty three minutes when a long ball into the Gresford area was pounced on by a Bala striker who slotted home from fifteen yards. Gresford had their best effort at goal in the last minute of the first half. A good run and pass by Kevin Todd to Phil Jones who passed to Matt Williams but his shot went straight at the home keeper.

Half time: Bala Town 3 Gresford Athletic 0

Bala started the second half as they had finished the first by taking the game to Gresford but it was Gresford who created the chances to get themselves back into the game. Alan Williams played Phil Jones in down the left and his dangerous cross was diverted for a corner. Then a Phil Jones free kick found the head of Kevin Todd but his header was easily saved. Gareth Williams then created another good chance but nobody was on hand to knock in his dangerous right wing cross. On seventy five minutes a good Gresford move involving Dave Lloyd and Gareth Williams resulted in Matt Williams hitting the Bala post with the keeper well beaten

Williams then nearly scored again five minutes later after Phil Jones and Gareth Williams combined down the left, the later's cross found Williams whose goal bound header hit a defender and was cleared. At the other end Shaun Williams and Gareth Rowland both had to make blocks as Bala created another good chance. It was four nil after seventy eight minutes Gresford paying the price for pushing men forward looking for the goal that would get them back in the game as a good chip from a Bala substitute found the back of the net. Gresford then had great chance to reduced the deficit. A great ball from Kevin Todd giving Simon Holloway a one on one with the home keeper that he failed to convert. A good short corner routine by Gresford saw Phil Jones shot for goal but the home keeper made a good save to prevent Gresford scoring a consolation goal. In the last minute Bala made it five to earn a well deserved place in the league cup semi-final.
