Halkyn had the first effort at goal when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area but the shot was well wide. Jon Ratcliffe then fed Simon Holloway down the Gresford right but his shot was straight at the Halkyn keeper. The same combination created another Gresford attempt at goal but this time Holloway's shot was blocked. Shaun Williams then made a great cross from the right that Holloway headed straight at the keeper. Halkyn took the lead in the twenty second minutes with a far post header from a free kick. Ratcliffe, Holloway all had half chances to get Gresford level.

Halkyn were giving the Gresford defence a lot of problems with their direct play and almost scored a second after a long ball opened up Gresford but the resulting shot was off target. A long ball out of defence caused problems on the edge of the Halkyn penalty are and their keeper poor clearance fell to Danny Purdie but his effort was well off target

Another Halkyn long ball forced Gresford keeper Gareth Rowland to come to the edge of his area and punch clear .Gresford then had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down as Alan Williams was floored. On forty three minutes Halkyn went two up, another long ball causing Gresford all sorts of problems as they allowed an Halkyn striker to fire home. Within two minutes Gresford pulled a goal back when Jon Ratcliffe headed home a Phil Jones cross

Gresford were not having the best of games and the ball seemed to be running against them. In Halkyn's first attack of the second half Rowland in the home goal had to be quickly off his line to smother the ball at an attackers feet. Danny Purdie then saw a header from a Phil Jones corner tipper round the post as Gresford looked for an equaliser. Halkyn almost scored a third with a chip over Rowland but Mike Gronnow managed to clear the ball off the line. But in the seventy fifth minute Halkyn went three one up, another long ball doing the damage. The Gresford management then made two changes to try and get back in the game. Gareth Williams almost creating a goal with a good run down the right but the Halkyn keeper made a good save from his cross. With time running out Danny Purdie scored Gresford's second converting a Phil Jones cross from close range and with the game well into added on time Phil Jones scored the equaliser after cutting in from the right and firing under the Halkyn keeper.
