Gresford Athletic 1-1 Holyhead Hotspurs
Saturday 12th. March

Gresford Athletic made just two changes from the side that picked up maximum points at Llanfair last week with Kevin Todd and Craig Williams unavailable Matt Williams shuffled into the heart of the defence and Dave Lloyd played on the left of midfield with Phil Jones moving up front to partner Simon Holloway in attack with. Gresford didn't exactly have the best of starts and skipper Gareth Rowland was adjudged to have fouled Dave Williams (although he said after the game that he did not touch him). He immediately atoned by saving the resulting spot-kick but Terry Williams scored from the rebound.

Simin Holloway fired wide in the 14 th minute when he might have done better and Jon Ratcliffe created a fine opening for Dave Lloyd but Merfyn Williams the ex Amlwch shot-stopper saved well. The game was held up for several minutes when Simon Holloway took a nasty knock which did seem to knock the stuffing out of him.

Half Time Gresford Athletic 0 Holyhead Hotspurs 1

The visitors again had the better if the early exchanges after the break with Gareth Rowland denying Nigel Moore and Terry Williams. Gresford's midfield lacked sparkle and Carl Andrews was showing an early sign of “red mist” getting involved in more than the odd confrontation. For all of Gresford's possession they did not create too many chances so to freshen things up manager Sammy Jones replaced Simon Holloway with Danny Purdie who made a quick impression. Not everyone at the ground was convinced the referee got it totally right when Gresford were awarded a 65 th minute penalty after Wyn Jones had been impeded by John Parry .

There was a short delay for the ref to separate Carl Andrews and Holyhead's number four who went eye-ball to eye-ball but then Phil Jones side-footed the spot-kick to the right of the keeper. Andrews did appear to be on borrowed time and on 72 minutes the referee had no alternative but to ‘march' him after an attempted “head butt” an opponent. Although down to ten men – Gresford finished strongly and it was a shame they didn't start with such vigour. Gresford seemed to lose the plot almost as soon as they reached their penalty area but will take some heart – it is now six games since they have lost in the league
