This game was the first of five home games in six weeks but judging by our home form this season, the doubters in the camp will be thinking this is more of a disadvantage to us than anything else !!

Sammy had sufficient confidence in the side that landed a point at LEX last week so Chris Newman, Mike Gronnow and Kev Todd did not get the instant recalls that under normal circumstances many thought would have been guaranteed. It really is an emotional topic at present, the policy deployed whereby shirts at Gresford Football Club are no longer guaranteed. Liaison between the two managers so far has paid rich dividends and several rookies from the Reserves have made quite an impression so whether you agree with the policy or otherwise, it really keeps everyone on their toes.

If you did not know the story behind the game then you would clearly jump to the wrong conclusion, last years Player of the Season Big Kev Todd on the bench, Newman and Mike Gronnow on parade with the Rezzies at Church Fields against Cefn United Reserves. Has Sam gone off his trolley ?? On the contrary, Keeno, Kev Hope and Gary Robinson have not let anyone down and Johnny Taylor has taken his chance too so Sam felt quite justified to keep faith in them.  Until the 60 minutes mark yesterday everything was going clearly to plan. Matty ‘MG' Williams and Gary were marshalling Keeno and Kevin like a pair of mother hens and visitors Penrhyncoch looked nothing more than an average side that were in the league basement with our defence looking rock solid.

We had a text book start, on just 4 minutes, Shaun Williams broke down the right flank and whipped in a long cross which Craig Williams turned in on the far post. It was the start we had longed for. Crags had been down in the dumps of late but this goal clearly lifted his confidence and he was on hand to bag goal number two in the 20 th minute after some fine graft from Danny Purdie.

The midfield looked in total control and were really alert with Slap showing up well. What chances the visitors did create, Pricey was alert to it and two probing in-swinging corners were punched away to safety.

Sam took his warriors in at the break feeling clearly justified by the side he stood faith with but what happened in the second half was like something from the rocky horror show.

HALF TIME
GRESFORD ATHLETIIC 2 PENRHYNCOCH 0

Keeno limped off in the 50 th minute with a hamstring strain and soon after, Huw Jones broke down the right and crossed for Liam Jones to pull a goal back from close range.

On the hour mark, Gary Robinson was dismissed following a last ditch challenge which resulted in a penalty which new player boss Gavin Allen converted.

From that moment onwards, everything went down hill. Matt who had been playing some of his best football in ages took a knock and took no further part in the game. Wyn Jones had a reoccurrence of an old injury and he also failed to see the game out so we really were put together like a patchwork quilt. Shaun had shuffled to fullback and Purdie partnered Kev Todd with Ian Mathias and Jonny Taylor plugging the gaps.

The ‘tails' were up in the Penrhyn camp and by now they were brimming with confidence as they sensed we were on the ropes. Allen completed his double salvo and schoolboy errors gifted the visitors last two goals which enabled Liam Jones to complete his hat-trick.

A bad day at the office – what an understatement !!
