In an even first fifteen minutes neither side created a notable chance, but this all changed when Bala were awarded a free kick which resulted in their centre back Llion Roberts heading home at the far post. Shaun Williams almost created an immediate equaliser for the home side but Craig Williams chipped wide from his excellent through ball. Gareth Rowland in the home goal then had to make double save to prevent Bala going two up.
Alan Williams then saw a far post header collected by Paul Evans in the Bala goal as Gresford searched for an equaliser. A Kevin Hope, Phil Jones move was then blocked by the Bala rear guard. On the stoke of half time Bala went two up, a highly disputed freekick was parried by Rowland and Owain Roberts netted the rebound.

Bala started the second half by winning a corner that came to nothing. Chris Newman then made a great run from the home defence that all so came to nothing. Gresford then won a free kick that Gareth Williams floated to the far post and Jon Ratcliffe powered a header goal wards only for Evans in the Bala goal to tip over the bar. Rowland in the home goal then made a double save to prevent Bala going three up on the counter attack.
Bala were then reduced to ten men as Steve Fisher was dismissed after his second yellow card. Gresford were now well on top and only a great save from Evans prevented them Alan Williams scoring with a header. The home sides Jon Ratcliffe was then dismissed after a reckless tackle. Gresford then had a goal disallowed for pushing and as ran out Bala were reduced to nine men as Alec Stacey was sent off for a dangerous and late tackle on Rob Jones
