Expectations were mighty high going into this 14th league encounter of the season despite the ‘doubting' Thomas's in the camp giving us little chance with us having such an appalling home record. A 4-2 away success at Llandyrnog fresh under our belt, a Welsh Cup success over our opponents, not to mention a 3-1 away league victory over the Anglesey new boys; so the scene was set surely to break our duck on home soil.

Sammy stuck with the same eleven from a fortnight ago, just Owen Spar Roberts coming in for Jonny Taylor on the bench

Somehow, almost from the off however that you had the feeling that it was not going to be our day. Bodedern don't play fancy football by any means but they were strong, showed great passion and had much more desire than us.

Ian Mathias and Crags had half chances in a first half which saw Huw Jones limp off with a re-occurrence of a shoulder injury and on came Chris Newman in a seamless change.

It shows what a shambolic first half it was because without doubt, the most positive piece of action to take place at Clappers Lane between 2pm and 2:45pm was the arrival of the Chairman Mayor Juliano with a Tesco bag under his arm, the thrifty club stalwart went on to sell 34 new hats. Now that is what you call a star performance !!

In fact, the younger members of our club could learn a lesson or two from our Jules who sweated blood every time he wore a Gresford shirt. So did the watching Evo and Ady who wore the shirt with immense pride. There is no suggestion for one minute we had players out there on Saturday who didn't care, on the contrary, but there was something sadly wrong.

We got what we deserved from this dour encounter and that is what Paul Daniels might say “Not a lot”. We were woeful in attack, lacked guile in midfield and were not exactly solid in defence either.

It just seemed a matter of time before Bodedern picked their moment to kill the game off and it came in the 78 th minute after a series of near misses for Corrie Sinnott and Craig Brodie. Sub Craig Tipton beat two defenders to send a curling shot over the head of Pricey to give Bodedern the points. Things might have been different had Danny Purdie, Ian Mathias and Kev Todd not have had great efforts thwarted by OJ Roberts. Things might have been different had the ref not booked eight Gresford players, above all else however, things might have been different had one or two of the players pulled their fingers out. I hope Sammy isn't panicked into making wholesale changes as the eleven who failed to deliver last week should ask themselves some

I hope Sammy isn't panicked into making wholesale changes as the eleven who failed to deliver last week should ask themselves some searching questions and show us their real potential. Pricey is the best shot stopper in the Cymru Alliance, Kev Todd has the knowledge how to marshall a tight defence, Slap is the most experienced midfielders in the league, Phil Jones has talent in abundance. When on fire, I would back Crags and Purdie as being amongst the best twin strike force around, Shaun can now play anywhere and will run all day and has a great engine, we have some new faces who are getting better week by week and I am referring to Ian, Kev and Gary. So I have every confidence with Wyn, Mike Gronnow, The Ratman and Matt Williams also coming into the frame, we will get out of this mess we are in !!
