Glantraeth were the first to force a corner after five minutes but this came to nothing as Gresford cleared. A quick throw in from Shaun Williams was then headed on by Alan Williams but Glantraeth cleared the danger. Gareth Rowland in the Gresford goal then punted a long kick into the Glantraeth penalty are which their centre back could only head on, but fortunately for them their keeper was well placed to catch. Both teams were looking to attack and it was Glantraeth who were next to force a corner, Kevin Todd making a good challenge in the Gresford area to thwart the danger. The Gresford bench were on their feet in the fifteenth minute when Richard Bean tried his luck from twenty five yards but the ball skimmed the top of the bar. A one two down the right flank between Jon Ratcliffe and Simon Holloway almost brought the first goal of the game but Ratcliffes header was well off target. A Glantraeth striker then tried his luck from twenty yards but Rowland in the Gresford goal dived to his left to smother the ball. Five minutes later Gresford opened the scoring, a free kick from the right taken by Phil Jones was only partially cleared and Simon Halloway with the help of a deflection found the back of the net with a left foot drive. Glantraeth were then almost gifted an equaliser as Chris Newman gave the ball away but they failed to make any thing of the opportunity.

HALF TIME: GLANTRAETH 0 GRESFORD ATHLETIC 1

Gresford began the second half in the attack and were awarded a free kick just outside the Glantraeth penalty are after the lively Holloway was fouled. Jon Ratcliffe's shot being easily saved. Gareth Rowland then had to come out of his area to clear, the ball going straight to a Glantraeth player who volleyed it goalwards, Kevin Todd was in a good position to head the attempt away.
Gresford were now getting men behind the ball and Glantreath found it very hard to break them down. In fact it was Gresford on the counter attack who were creating the better chances with Holloway and Ratcliffe causing Glantraeth all sorts of problems. From one of these attacks Holloway tried his luck from just outside the penalty area, his shot just too high. Next it was Ratcliffe who broke up an attack on the half way line before making a great run into the penalty area only to see the Glantaeth keeper turn his shot for a corner. Glantraeth then forced a couple of corners that the outstanding Gresford rearguard cleared. Glantraeth were fortunate not to be reduced to ten men withy ten minutes remaining. Holloway making another great run only to be fouled by the last Glantraeth defender on the edge of the box, to every bodies surprise the referee only sowing a yellow card to the defender. The resulting free kick from Phil Jones was straight at the home keeper. Gresford played the final ten minutes out to come away with a well deserved three points.
