Holyhead Hotspur Vs. Gresford Athletic
Saturday 4th. September
Gresford were forced to change the side that took their first point of the season in midweek.
Craig Trow, Wyn Jones and Jon Ratcliffe returning to the starting line up. Sixteen year olds Luke Peate and Darren Jones taking two of the substitute places.
Gresford started brightly with Hugh Jones in aggressive mood and he was the first to have an effort at goal but his thirty yard drive went well wide. Gresford were taking the game to Holyhead and after a Danny Purdie flick on Simon Holloway saw his effort clear the bar. Craig Trow in the Gresford goal then gave the ball away in his penalty area but Holyhead wasted the chance. Gresford went ahead in the twenty second minute, Shaun Williams winning the ball in midfield and playing a good ball in to Danny Purdie whose shot found the back of the net. It was almost two nil five minutes later when Jon Ratcliffe headed a Simon Holloway corner over the bar. Gresford were keeping the ball well and went two up after forty two minutes Hugh Jones chipping over the Holyhead defence for Simon Holloway to beat the keeper to the ball. A Carl Andrews free kick was then headed straight at the home keeper by Shaun Williams.

Half time: Holyhead Hotspur 0 Gresford Athletic 2
Holyhead with the slope in their favour started the second half on the attack and Hugh Jones had to be alert with a last ditch tackle to prevent them scoring. Another good Holyhead attack resulted in a shot that went well wide as they tried to get back into the game. Gresford should have scored a third on fifty minutes when a Jon Ratcliffe through ball found Simon Holloway but he shot wide when well placed. The same player missed another gilt edged opportunity after being put clear from a Hugh Jones pass, this time he shot at the advancing keeper. Gresford then scored two goals in five minutes, Phil Jones rifling home a twenty yarder and Kevin Todd heading home a Simon Holloway corner. Gresford could have added more goals, the best effort coming from Carl Andrews who shot over the bar. Gresford introduced youngsters Luke Peate and Darren Jones as substitutes to give them a taste of first team action with time running out Holyhead scored a consolation goal, heading home from a free kick.
