Gresford traveled to Holywell Town having never won an opening day fixture since returning the the Cymru Alliance five seasons ago.
The management team selected a four four two formation with Ian Matthias making his debut for the club and Chris Broadhurst his Cymru Alliance debut

| Gresford started the game on the attack and debutant Ian Matthias almost gave them the lead after three minutes but Tyrell in the home goal blocked with his feet. Two minutes later Gresford went ahead, A move involving Shaun Williams and Matt Cooper resulting in over lapping full back Hugh Jones squaring the ball for Chris Broadhurst to tap home from six yards. |

The first twenty five minutes saw Tyrell in the home goal pull off at least four first class saves, denying Matthias a debut goal by turning a pile driver over the bar, thwarting captain Kevin Todd twice and block a Shaun Williams effort .
Holywell were looking dangerous from set pieces but Todd and Newman at the heart of the Gresford defence superbly to keep them at bay. With Todd marshalling his defence brilliantly.

On the stroke of half time Gresford should have added to their total with Matthias and Matt Cooper wasting good opportunities.
HALF TIME:

Holywell created the first chance of the half but failed to test Mike Price in the home goal .Gresford went two up on fifty three minutes, Cooper converting from close range after good work by Shaun Williams and Ian Matthias. Three minutes later it was three nil. Phil Jones was fouled on the edge of the penalty area after a mazy run and Wyn Jones fired home the free kick. |

Holywell then made a double substitution and Chris Gaizedale pulled a goal back with a shot that was deflected into the corner. Matthias then had a great chance to open his account with a great run from the half way line, but his shot failed to find the target. Gresford added a fourth on seventy five minutes when Broadhurst found space in the Holywell six yard box to fire home a Phil Jones corner. With five minutes remaining another great run by Ian Matthias was halted by a full length save from Alan Tyrell but unfortunately for him he was outside the penalty area and got his marching orders
