Gresford started brightly and had the ball in the net in the fifth minute when Alan Williams headed in a Phil Jones freekick but was adjudged to be offside. Phil Jones then created a half chance for Craig Williams that was blocked. Llanfair then attacked down the right but a twenty yard shot was well wide. A Kevin Hope cross was then headed onto the bar by Shaun Williams as Gresford pressed for the first goal. Another Hope cross was headed into Danny Purdie path only for the over worked Llanfair defence to clear

Llanfair then created chances first from a free kick that Mike Price smothered and then Robbie Jones had to be alert to clear off the line with Price beaten. As the half time whistle approached Gresford had three great chances to open the scoring firstly a Purdie low cross was blocked, Jon Ratcliffe then saw a header just clear the bar and a Craig Williams header from a Ratcliffe cross came back off the bar.

Llanfair prepare to defend a corner

The second half started with Gresford again taking the game to Llanfair. Llanfair responded with the opening goal. Slack defensive work by the home defence allowing Pete Jones to score with a angled drive. Two minutes later Gresford were level. A Phil Jones corner created panic in the Llanfair defence and Kevin Hope fired home from twelve yards. Chris Newman then had to clear off the line in another Llanfair counter attack. A great ball from Kevin Hope found Danny Purdie and his pass in turn found Shaun Williams who with the goal at his mercy hammered the ball against the bar.

On sixty five minutes Gresford were awarded a penalty when Ben Heard in the Llanfair goal upended Craig Williams, Phil Jones fired home the penalty to give Gresford a well deserved lead. Gresford were well on top at the stage and should have sealed a well earned victory before Llanfair drew level when a freekick was punched out by Mike Price and fell to the feet of Ian Burgess who fired a low shot into the corner. Gresford in search of a long awaited home win created chance after chance but could not sore the elusive winner.
