BRADLEY 2 GRESFORD ATHLETIC RESERVES 3
By Captain Web
Well we really are turning out to be the leagues in form team at the moment and we are a real joy to watch and that is official because it is a quote from Bernie Simon.
Just the one change was made this week with Chal returning from a stint of first team duty.
I missed the start and didn't take in too much of the match I must confess as I was still reeling from a night out on the tiles in Paris . I always get to the match just by the seat of my pants but kicking off 15 minutes early really naffed me off, especially as I missed Matt Davies opening our account after 8 minutes.
Gladly, I was there to witness goal number two. Bradley had defender Richard Weiko hobbling off injured on 18 minutes and whilst manager Neil Pritchard was still organising his substitution, we took a quick throw in and broke from deep and Matty doubled our tally leaving Bradley looking for an offside decision and complaining bitterly that they weren't allowed time to make a substitution. The offiside ? Definitely not ! Were Bradley hard done to over the substitution – Yep.
Our first half performance was as good as we have played all season and we deserved our two goal cushion.
We did sit back and rested on our laurels somewhat after the break and against the run of play, a mix up in defence let in Wayne Evans to reduce the margin.
Back we came to regain the two goal cushion on 72 minutes when Bradley conceded one of the daftest own goals I have seen in my 25 year involvement in local soccer. Under little pressure, a Bradley defender sent a lengthy back header to his keeper from a full 50 yards and on it went over the head of the keeper and despite a scramble to rescue the boob – the ball went in off the post.
Protecting a two goal lead, Ady and Sam sent on Owen and Hughesey for Matt and Broady and both were quick to get in the thick of the action.
Much was made of the fact recently that we are a hard team to beat and that is true and whilst our overall defending is spot on we are too casual at times and we are prone to making stupid misakes. The only way our defence is going to be breached is when we press the self destruct button and this happened for our second goal when Leighton Roberts was gift wrapped a chance to prod the ball past Pricey.
Yet again a great team performance but several players worthy of particular praise. Wyn and GPJ on the flanks caused loads of problems, the ‘twins' in midfield coped well, Sooty was solid and was strong as an ox and the front two are looking real quality. The only down side for me though was the over-use of bad language. Not a lot we can do about the opposition but for our part, I hope Ady and Sam nip such vulgarity in the bud.
A blunder by Owen earned him the TWA Tea award – how can you miss from 2 yards out ? Ask Owen.
In the normal post match exclusive interview Ady was really on a high. “Sam and I were really pleased by what we achieved today, great team spirit with a great work ethic. I can't believe how much work Richie gets through in a match and he has been a great signing but for his two goals, Matt gets the vote for man of the match.
