MATCH REPORT
By Captain Webb-Jones

It may come as a surprise to many to learn that our skipper and central defender Steven Halliwell has a very fond love of music and Opera in particular. His mad antics of grabbing the ‘Town Halls’ of Alan Dawson in the 55th minute of the game at New Brighton many are suggesting were stimulated by his fondness of Tchaikovsky’s legendary renditioning of The Nutcracker Suite !! I personally disagree somewhat and a scene from Dad’s Army came to mind, I think it was the renowned phrase of Captain Mainwaring’s which made me think this way “STUPID BOY” is a more articulate way of describing the incident. The fact we won out League Cup semi final game at New Brighton 6-4 on aggregate in the end allows me to take a light hearted and tainted view of the situation but one thing for sure, he was a “Tower of Strength” in a one sided first half but his moment of madness could have cost us dearly as he enacted the famous Vinnie Jones plum squeeze on Paul Gascoigne. It was all going really well when Jason Gray bundled the ball home from close range and Matt Davies gave us a three goal cushion but after the Skippers dismissal we went to pot. In an amazing turn-around, Paul Worral(2) and Bryn Roberts took the game into extra time with Gresford looking tired and weary but they defied the odds, Graham Sutcliffe converted a 30 yard free-kick to put Gresford back in the game and then the evergreen Chris Broadhurst made the tie safe to book a place in the final against Castell Alun. We must of course give special mention to a cameo appearance by manager Ady Roberts and the highlight of his contribution was his class in the air in fact his efforts were likened to Sir Douglas Barder, exceptionally good in the air but not so mobile on the deck
