GRESFORD ATHLETIC RESERVES 5 RHOS AELWYD RESERVES 1
Welsh National Division One League Cup
By Captain Web
The Gresford juggernaut rolls on and on and after a great stint in the league we were back on league cup duty but kept our momentum going.
The win was costly though with an ambulance called to take Darren Jones to hospital with what looked like a badly damaged knee.
What was also sad to observe was the fact our squad is so strong now, Danny Gronnow, Huw Birkdale and Craig Trow couldn't even find a place on the bench.
Wyn Jones was ineligible for the tie and GPJ was on holiday so it was nice to welcome back the master craftsman Matt Williams and give DAz a chance again.
This was a physical encounter though which saw several key players get knocks, Richie Carr has a brusied ankle, as mentioned earlier Darren injured his knee, Robbie has a huge gash on his thigh. Sooty and Chal limped off so in a way, this soured our success somewhat.
What a dream start though, I was right behind the goal when Broady was set free and he scored an exceptional opening goal beating the keeper from way outside of the box in the 5 th minute.
Before the cheering could die down a thunderbolt from Sooty deceived the keeper and he fumbled it into his own net.
By the break we were cruising 2-0 despite lots of stoppages for crunching and late Rhos tackles.
A calm dressing room assessed the 45 minutes ahead of us and we went out with the message. “Lets be sensible in the opening period and make no silly mistakes”
Robbie came on in a straight switch for Darren but just 35 seconds into the half, Rhos reduced the deficit with a close range effort from Matty Dodd.
We responded in the best possible fashion and on 47 minutes Robbie and Sooty worked well down the right flank and from a resulting cross Broady scored with a thumping header which gave the keeper no chance. I was right behind the goal and believe you me, the crossed ball must have been going 100mph at least so he was brave to get his head to it and I bet it is quite sore even now
The goal was just we wanted and it calmed our nerves but shortly after both of our fullbacks went off injured. It was a simple adjustment to get Matt to fill in for Chal but Robbie dropped into the right back slot and did well. Chris Hughes and Owen then occupied the wide berths and made a significant impression. Hughesy went on a jinking run and was poll-axed on 74 minutes and Haggis converted the resulting spot-kick to deny Broady and his new boots the chance of a hat-trick.
With eight minutes left, little Owen who had been causing havoc with his speed crossed for Matt Davies to enable us to go nap and reach the semi-final of the league cup.
In the post match exclusive interview Ady was quite subdued. Naturally delighted with the teams success but as what cost he bemoaned. It was a great all round team performance. Broady took his two goals really well proving again what an excellent predator he is and the youngsters proved they are not far off a regular shirt also.
TWA – Tea Award Matt Williams. An eagle eyed onlooker saw him knock a ball with a ‘Broady' shout yet it fell perfectly into the path of Robbie.
