GRESFORD ATHLETIC RESERVES 0 AIRBUS UK 0

By Captain Web Jones

Lets start on a positive note this week, I arrived on time, sufficient time in fact to get an up to date team photograph for our sponsor. We had the rare chance to select from 20 players and Ady was so excited he could choose from a full squad he launched into his first of several malapropisms of the day during his pre-match team talk. He reminded the players of our last home performance against Chirk stating it was “abortionate” !!!

I gave Ady the thumbs up after 5 minutes because unlike the last three games, at least we had not conceded a goal in the opening stages in fact, our defence was seldom breached all afternoon.

It wasn’t exactly a dour 90 minutes but I have in fact seen paint dryer quicker. Richie Carr and Haggis coped really well in the heart of the defence and are forming a formidable partnership of orgasmic proportions according to Ady.

On their day, Matt Davies, Matt Williams and Keeno must be amongst the most talented midfielders in the league but at the moment we don’t seem to be able to have all three firing on all cylinders together. Darren Jones and Aled Pugh Jones did add a nice balance when they came on as late subs and will put pressure on their colleagues for a shirt next week.

Robbie and Broady worked tirelessly but had little to show for their labours and the best chances of the game came from dead-ball situations from our defenders and a series of five close range headers which were all steered into the keepers mid-rift. There were sufficient positives to emerge from the game though but it will be back to the drawing board for the Roberts and Ainge combo. We need to go back to basics a bit for me and be a bit more simple in our passing. There is nothing wrong in making a 2 yard pass tell rather than look for the 25 yard difficult ball which looks class but falls at the feet of the opposition. It must have been a close call for man of the match with Ady first choosing Richie Carr then changing his mind and opting for Ollie as he was very impressed with his positive contribution to the game.

The TWA Team award went to Ady yet again, I honestly think he was stitched up a bit though. Yes there were more gaffs, the clowning pre-match warm up routine, the loss of the keys and more spoonerisms etc etc – so all in all a popular winner.
