Druid Sports & Leisure Welsh National Div One
Gresford Athletic Res Vs. Chirk AAA RES
Saturday 18th. September

ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END

By CAPTAIN WEBB JONES

The pitch looked like Wembley, conditions were perfect and the scene was set for Ady’s young pups to take points from their first home game of the season.

Chirk clearly hadn’t read our script and fresh from a fine performance in a pre-season friendly against us they were fired up to take the points which to be fair they thoroughly deserved.
Sammy had to make a late call on our already thin resources so Robbie Jones and Huw Birkdale were sent on a wasted journey to Holyhead Road for the Welsh Cup game which never got off the ground.
We had already lost Dave Lloyd who was due to start at left back for the first team so Gareth Pugh Jones made his first start of the season and Richie Lloyd returned to our attack.
Ady Roberts was at his wits end by half time and was ready to pull out the remainder of what little hair he has left. We conceded a diabolical goal, Geoff and “The Hag” got in a bit of a mess and Ollie’s false call let in Chirk for the easiest goal they are going to score all season.

Ady bemoaned “What hurt me was the fact everything we do so well on the training ground and have put into previous matches went right out of the window. I was gutted to see the lack of bottle in every single department, we lacked heart and passion and although we showed up slightly better after slinging a few tea cups around the changing rooms at half time, our overall performance was not good enough. Our defence was at sixes and sevens, we failed to get to grips in midfield and didn’t compete and we failed to create chances up front.”
“You mark my words, there will be wholesale changes for next week and I will address the teams fitness in the midweek training sessions”.

To be fair, I think we should have taken a point from the game with Chris Hughes going close with minutes left and Richie Lloyd had a first half effort thwarted.

There were a few positives, Luke Peate continues to mature and he notched his first ever man of the match award.

The TWA Tea Award went to Ollie. Our player of the season was carrying the can for Chirk’s goal. For my part, there were bigger deficiencies in our team play and my vote also went to the whole team for their below-par contribution.
