Overton Vs. Gresford Ath Res

Saturday 4th. September

UNBEATEN START MAINTAINED
By CAPTAIN WEBB JONES

Reserve team boss Ady Roberts admitted he was very disappointed with dropping two points for the second consecutive week but there were enough positives to emerge from the game for him to go home happy. “I was particularly pleased with the discipline and the desire to win. You could have heard a pin point in the dressing room after the match which is not the normal sign after you have produced a last gasp equaliser. This emphasises best of all how disappointed the lads were with the result.” Out of the three games played so far though this wasn’t exactly vintage stuff.

Just one change was forced upon us but the back four remained the same. Keeno returned from injury and showed some nice touches but tired, he came in for Darren Jones who joined Luke Peate with the first team at Holyhead.

Conditions were extremely warm and the pitch was bone hard and far from being ideal. Our early dominance created few chances but Richard Lloyd and Robbie Jones who again worked is socks off for a small lad both went close.

At the opposite end – Ollie was caught on camera putting on his Ambre Soliaire as he was rarely called upon and he just soaked up the sun. In fact just one save to his left and a fine punch from a corner was his only contribution of the game.

Steven Halliwell is maturing like a fine wine and gone would appear those moments of madness and rushes of blood which so many of us have associated with him. ( I always knew he was a pusscat though) In fact he showed some fine leadership qualities. He won everything in the air and his distribution continues to improve week by week.

Sooty limped off at the break with a back injury so Chris Hughes came on into midfield and Jeff partnered “The Hagg” at the back.
Again Gresford had the better of the second half but failed to take the chances which came their way. Huw Birkland and Daf Johnson had their chances as late subs as we needed fresh blood but against the run of play, old warhorse Pat Loughlin breached our defence and fired hard and low under the advancing Ollie with 2 minutes remaining. We forced a series of corners in a late sortie and thankfully a 91st minute inswinger from Lloydy was powerfully headed home for a deserved leveller by Matty Davies.

Man of the match Steven Halliwell who just pipped Matt and Robbie.

The Newly sponsored TWA Tea Award went to Ady. (Now there is a surprise)
Now Ady is getting famous for his quotes but this ranks about one of his best yet. He asked the normally officious Neal Atkins who has just lost 2 stone on the Atkinson Diet and looked fitter than ever “Neal, I am running the line today, would you like me to do the Ins and Outs to which Neal coyly replied “JUST THE OUTS WOULD BE FINE BY ME ADY”
