Gresford made the short journey to Bradley to play a Summerhill side who they needed extra time to beat in the same competition last season. Richard Bean and Wyn Jones made the starting eleven with Carl Andrews, Dave Lloyd and Chris Newman on the bench

On a heavy pitch and with the wind makinging difficult to play football Gresford started the game on the attack although it was Gareth Rowland in the Gresford goal who had to make the fisrt save of the game, turning a powerful shot round the upright. Richard Bean they tried his luck from thirty yards but his effort did not trouble the home keeper. Gresford were denied by the cross bar on fifteen minutes. A stunning thity-five yard freekick from Wyn Jones coming back off the underside of the cross bar. Two minutes later they went ahead, a Phil Jones free kick finding Jon Ratcliffe at the far paot and he powered home a header. It was two nil five minutes later when Simon Holloway and Danny Purdie combined and the later firing home an unstoppable shot from fifteen yards. Gresford were now well in control and increased their lead three minutes later. Wyn Jones made a good run and passed to Simon Hollway who in turn fed Jon Ratcliffe who made no mistake for his second goal of the game. Gresford had further chance to increase their led but it was Summerhill who scored next after a long ball caught ot the Gresford defence.

Summerhill came out for the second half looking to take the game to Gresford, but Gresford looked well in command and could have added to their advantage with Jon Ratcliffe, Danny Purdie and Simon Holloway all going close. Summerhill did force a series of corners but Gareth Rowland in the Gresford goal dealt comfortably with their crosses. He was forced into one good save after Summerhill opened up the Gresford defence. Wyn Jones then made a great run before being fouled on the edge of the penalty area. Jon Ratcliffe looking for his hat trick goal took the free kick but it went straight at the home keeper. Ratcliffe was on hand again as a Wyn Jones free kick found him at the far post but he failed to hit the target with his header. With time running out Summerhill pushed forward looking for the goal that would get them back into the game but the Gresford back five coped comfortably as they marched into the next round.
