2004/2005 Season REVIEW by captain Webb |
|---|
All the talk in pre-season was about consolidation as both teams had new people in the key management positions. Alan (Sammy) Jones was again at the helm as first team Manager but he had a new assistant in former player and Jamie Tennant. The Reserves had a completely new management team with Ady Roberts taking over from Mark Evans as manager and Simon (Sam) Ainge becoming his assistant.
Pre-season training was excellent and friendly games came and went.
After five games the first team were pointless and it looked like it was going to be long hard season, the Reserves had a much better start with two wins, two draws and a defeat in their first five.
By Christmas the first team results had picked up considerably and with the introduction of new player coach Alan Williams and they had a great Welsh cup run beating eventual Cymru Alliance Champions Buckley Town and only losing on penalties to Welsh Premier side Carmarthen who reached the final of the competition. The Reserves went unbeaten throughout December and held a very respectable position in the league table.
Both sides went from strength to strength in the second half of the season and a six game unbeaten run by the first team saw manager Alan Jones pick up the Cymru Alliance manager of the month ward, the first ever awarded to Gresford Athletic manager. The Reserves went undefeated for nineteen games and reached the final of two cup competitions, another first for Gresford Athletic.
By the end of the season the First team had secured their best ever Cymru Alliance season finishing eighth with a record number of points and a plus goal difference for the first ever time. The Reserves went on to win the League cup, were beaten finalist in the NEWFA Horace Wynne cup and finish third in the league.
Overall an excellent season for the club with prospects for next season high.
